Note: Dropping the Swaddle
Like all you new mamas know, the new thing is swaddling your baby. We started swaddling Jack from the first day in the hospital on. I actually loved it because he looked like a baby burrito + also slept super well. But once he started moving around, Cody and I could tell it was time to come out of the swaddle, but we were sooo scared to do it.
Our first attempt was when Jack turned 3 months old. I went cold turkey into a sleepsack and by 10 PM, we were all exhausted. I chalked it up as an epic failure, swaddled Jack and we all went back to sleep for the night.
At 16 weeks (a bit shy of 4 months for Jack), we knew we had to drop the swaddle, even though we were both TERRIFIED. I decided to easily transition Jack since he's better with slooooow changes, rather than rapid ones. For 2 days, I swaddled him with one arm out. Then for 2 days, I swaddled him with both arms out. And then, finally, we transitioned him into the Nested Bean Zen Sack. IT WAS GREAT! Actually, once we finally had him unswaddled, he slept through the night for the first time ever!
Dropping the swaddle taught me once again to trust my mommy instincts! I knew it was too early at 3 months (even though all the books told me it was time). Once I knew in my gut swaddling was hurting his sleep, rather than helping his sleep, the transition went soooo smooth! Also, I learned to invest in some good sleep sacks! Just like we adults invest in luxurious duvets + sheets, babies want to feel comfortable too! I love the Nested Bean Zen Sack because it' s super soft (made out of bamboo) and has tiny beans on the front to make your baby feel like your hand is gently resting on their chest. If you have a tummy sleeper, you can turn it around so it feels as though your hand is resting on their back.
Now that Jack is swaddle-free, we are happier sleepers! Today he turned 5 months + we're trying to drop the Dock-A-Tot so say a prayer for us if you can :). Babies are full of transitions in their first year!
